Alexa Griffith Winton is an independent scholar and writer specializing in the visual and material culture of the last century. Her research engages issues of craft in the industrial and computer ages, the role of technology in modern domestic design, and the continued articulation of the theoretical implications of the domestic interior. Her research methods are both theoretical and object-based in approach and interdisciplinary in nature. She is currently researching the intersections of art, science and design in contemporary creative practice, including the self-actuating and “digitally crafted” textile installations exploring the relationship of textile to space. Within the context of this research, Winton aims to articulate the critical yet under-theorized ethical implications of these hybrid endeavors: this work fuses traditional textile techniques (typically associated with women’s domestic labor) with highly advanced methods of computation and fabrication, posing provocative questions about the roles of “women’s work,” of emergent technologies, and of domestic environments that can not only create themselves, but also in some cases even (re)act on their own initiative. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and young daughter.
